Spider-Man Reboot. Who should be the Love interest?

 Over the last few days, It's been hinted at, alluded to and suggested that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are in the process of actively casting the "New" Peter Parker for the 2017 re-lauch of Spider-Man.

Now reports all seem to suggest and point towards, both Studio's agreeing that the fresh approach to take with the cinematic version of the character of Spider-Man, would be to start from the beginning.....again! panic not and before you baulk at another retelling of the origin, let me inform you that, it's been said no-one at the studio's on either side has an overwhelming desire to retell the tale of the Spider bite or the killing of Uncle Ben. and the internet breathes a collective sigh of relief on that one.

But given that, we are being led to believe that the relaunch, will focus on Peter Parker in high school, so that the complexities of relationships can be further explored. not too mention that numerous news outlets are stating that the new film will be following the adventures of a 15 year old Spider-Man another question needs to be addressed.

Just who will be the love interest in this series of movies? will there in fact even be a love interest? I mean do we need to see Spider-Man dealing with teen angsty relationship issues? and even if we do i repeat who are they going to go for?

Recently, there has been a lot of chatter regarding a possible love interest. in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films we had Mary Jane Watson, as the girl next door girl who was the object of Peter's desire. which ultimately fell flat as none of Mary Jane's character was any where near adequately portrayed by Kirsten Dunst.

We then had Gwen Stacy, as the love angle for the Amazing Spider-Man series. who had a hell of a lot more substance to her than her comic book counter part. However over the years Peter Parker has had a number of girlfriends. The first one being as we all know Liz Allen, then Betty Brant before flitting between Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy back and forth before settling on Gwen. After she was killed by Gerry Con.....I mean Norman Osborn, Peter dated Deborah Whitman, and Felicia Hardy, before eventually marrying MJ.

Now since that day day back in 2007 and the fabled Amazing Spider-Man #545, dissolution of Peter and Mary Jane's marriage, Peter has indeed been playing the field a bit more. A few others that come to mind are Michele Gonzales, Carlie Cooper.

Maybe you like me feel that there's no real need for a love interest, that perhaps they should concentrate on getting the character of Peter Parker and Spider-Man right and telling his story before adding the complication plot lines and such. Or at the very least not have the love interest as prominent a figure in Peter's life as we' already seen, the temptation for screenwriters is that the love interest just becomes a plot device and is used as a timid damsel in distress. 

If they choose to use, either Gwen or Mary Jane again it does a huge disservice in my mind to the women who have played a significant role within Peter's life and development.

Should the film makers progress with their idea's of returning Parker to high school, then if there is a love interest, they should make her Liz Allan. After all she was Peter's first crush and as it later transpired she always had a fondness for Peter despite being the girlfriend of Flash Thompson. 

Yet there is the part of me that feels, they once again are going to return to Mary Jane Watson. based on latest speculation that Shailene Woodley when recently asked in an interview if she would consider the role of Mary Jane Watson for the relaunch, stated she'd be very much interested. 

I do need to re-iterate though, should the studios' go down the path of Mary Jane once again i feel it's a opportunity missed. ok, some may argue that both Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, represent the most important love interests in Peter's life. However isn't that because none of the others have even been given a chance or their relationships with Peter been explored? 

So now I'll put it to you fine people out there. Lets get this debate started, If you were the screen writer for the forthcoming Spider-Man movie in 2017, who would you have as the love interest? would you have a love interest? let me know in the comments section below.
