Review: Amazing Spider-Man #16.1 - Spiral Pt 1

Story By: Gerry Conway

Artist: Carlo Barberi

Cover Art: Arthur Adams/ Sonia Oback

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cover Price: $3.99

Since it was announced way back in early October last year. That, legendary Spider-Man writer Gerry Conway, was set to return to the book where he made his name as a writer. I've been racking my brains over what the story might intail.

Subsequent announcements, were released stating that the story was to be five part mini series, set after the events of Spider-Verse. An old fashioned Spidey story wrapped around a Gang War, that would see the return of old luminaries such as Tombstone, Hammerhead, Mister Negative and newest crime boss to New York City The Black Cat.

For the first time in Forty Years. we were told that Conway would be helming a Spider-Man story in the flagship title. So was the wait worth the hype? were my dreams of reliving my childhood in the guise of reading a new Conway Amazing Spider-Man arc realised.

I'm here to tell you that yes they were. Infact for me there are only two pepole who are capable of constructing a Spider-Man story better than Gerry Conway, those two are in fact Stan Lee and Roger Stern. and with this first part of Spiral, that certainly remains the case in my mind.

The start of this storyline, which is set to run for five issues, is beautiful in it's simplicity, it feels like the start of a Spidey tale of yesteryear with the pacing and set up's crafted in a slow boiling manner, before the inevitable joys of action take over.

The story starts of with Spider-Man, contemplating his life direction after the events of Spider-Verse how he matches up with the differing Spider-Men/Women/Pigs/Cats/Wolf's  he's encountered, when he comes across a seige taken place at a construction site and a stand off between Tombstone and New York's finest.

Spider-Man, overhears a conversation between police Captain Watanabe, and Detective Rangel, and offers to step in to take Tombstone down. The Captain informs him that the New Bureau chief wants things handled by the book.

A shoot-out soon occurs when, one of Tombstone's men gets a little edgy, which results in Tombstone ordering that everyone dies. It's at this moment that Spider-Man intervenes and with one puch sends Tombstone into the river, ending the siege.

The fallout being, Detective Rangel is shot and taken to hospital where he falls into a coma, whilst at the arraignment for Tombstone, the Judge presiding determines that the warrant to search the construction site, was not obtained legally resulting in him dismissing the case and releasing Tombstone.

Back at the hospital, Peter Parker, conveniently bumps into Captain Watanabe as she's visiting Detective Rangel, during a conversation she lets slip that, recently there are signs of an impending Gang War on the horizon, since the Kingpin fled the country to Europe and the other crime families in New York have, set up to battle each other for overall control of the city's crime empire.Whilst this discussion is taking place Detective Rangel suffers a major heart attack.

It's at his funeral that Captain Watanabe, is approached by Mister Negative who has incriminating pictures of the Judge who let Tombstone go free. Being supplied a substance from one of Tombstone's henchmen. Watanabe shows these pictures to the Bureau Chief, however she decides that the pictures are nothing more than circumstantial and demands real evidence of corruption by the Judge.

This leads to Watanabe, resuming her vigilante guise of the Wraith, she she infiltrates the constuction site base of Tombstone to discover the evidence she needs. whilst there Spider-Man, arrives to give her assistance. the pair manage to acquire what The Wraith was after before she leaves, leaving Spider-Man, to contemplate what they are getting into.

I really got into this first issue, there was quite a lot of set up going on and players being manoeuvred, into position for the forthcoming parts, but that is to be expected by a first part, the trick for any writer is to keep the reader compelled and interested in what they're reading. This issue does just that and I'm look forward to the next issue.

I'm going to give this issue an solid 7.5 as a rating, because it sets the story off on strong foundations and I can't wait to see where this is all going to lead

Spider-Man in Age of Ultron post credits scene?

The latest rumour to hit the net since the news that Spider-Man is now "On Loan" to the MCU, and that Sony and Marvel are collaborating on a new solo movie slated for 28/07/17. is this.

An apparent insider, has stated that. there is a likely chance that the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, may be the vehicle used to introduce Spider-Man to the MCU. Before full exposure to the wall crawler in Captain America: Civil War.

Now personally, I'd take this with a Huuuuuuuuuuuge grain of salt, in fact you may as well throw the entire salt shaker on there too. However the report I read at Nerd Report claims that their source has been on the set of AOU where re-shoots are happening, that he has seen additional footage and even a "Spider-Man" on the set.

Now whether this can be believed is open to debate, but it's worth baring in mind that re-shoots and additional footage was taking place for Avengers Assemble, two days before the premier of that movie, which was the Schwarma scene at the end.

So lets just think about this. Is it completely unlikely that AOU ends, The Avengers have stopped Ultron, the credits roll, fades to black, when all of a sudden there's the New York Skyline flashed on screen and in the backdrop a certain wall crawler swinging through the streets, on his way to some emergency?

Is it so unfathomable that, this could happen? I guess we'll see come the release date which for over in my part of the world is April 24th. or perhaps this is just an unfounded rumour or a bit of confusion. Lets not forget Jenny Agutter stating she's seen Spider-Man's trailer during the filming of Avengers Assemble.

Anyway this is just a quick entry as I stumbled across this news, which i might add isn't being widely reported. Make of that what you will. I have included a link to the Nerd Report's article, which is up on their site. For you to peruse for yourselves should you wish.

As I've said though, I'm of the view that this is highly unlikely to happen, however as we get closer to the release date more stories like this are likely to emerge. and It offer's up an interesting talking point, How would you introduce Spider-Man into the MCU via a thirty second slot of a post credit scene?

So what do you think, could it be we'll get a glimpse of Spider-Man in costume before the role has been cast? bare in mind that you don't need a specific person in costume, in fact the source claims it's probably a stuntman. has this news got you more hyped?

Spider-Man Reboot. Who should be the Love interest?

Over the last few days, It's been hinted at, alluded to and suggested that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are in the process of actively casting the "New" Peter Parker for the 2017 re-lauch of Spider-Man.

Liz Allan
Now reports all seem to suggest and point towards, both Studio's agreeing that the fresh approach to take with the cinematic version of the character of Spider-Man, would be to start from the beginning.....again! panic not and before you baulk at another retelling of the origin, let me inform you that, it's been said no-one at the studio's on either side has an overwhelming desire to retell the tale of the Spider bite or the killing of Uncle Ben. and the internet breathes a collective sigh of relief on that one.

But given that, we are being led to believe that the relaunch, will focus on Peter Parker in high school, so that the complexities of relationships can be further explored. not too mention that numerous news outlets are stating that the new film will be following the adventures of a 15 year old Spider-Man another question needs to be addressed.

Betty Brant
Just who will be the love interest in this series of movies? will there in fact even be a love interest? I mean do we need to see Spider-Man dealing with teen angsty relationship issues? and even if we do i repeat who are they going to go for?

Recently, there has been a lot of chatter regarding a possible love interest. in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films we had Mary Jane Watson, as the girl next door girl who was the object of Peter's desire. which ultimately fell flat as none of Mary Jane's character was any where near adequately portrayed by Kirsten Dunst.

We then had Gwen Stacy, as the love angle for the Amazing Spider-Man series. who had a hell of a lot more substance to her than her comic book counter part. However over the years Peter Parker has had a number of girlfriends. The first one being as we all know Liz Allen, then Betty Brant before flitting between Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy back and forth before settling on Gwen. After she was killed by Gerry Con.....I mean Norman Osborn, Peter dated Deborah Whitman, and Felicia Hardy, before eventually marrying MJ.
Gwen Stacy

Now since that day day back in 2007 and the fabled Amazing Spider-Man #545, dissolution of Peter and Mary Jane's marriage, Peter has indeed been playing the field a bit more. A few others that come to mind are Michele Gonzales, Carlie Cooper.

Maybe you like me feel that there's no real need for a love interest, that perhaps they should concentrate on getting the character of Peter Parker and Spider-Man right and telling his story before adding the complication plot lines and such. Or at the very least not have the love interest as prominent a figure in Peter's life as we' already seen, the temptation for screenwriters is that the love interest just becomes a plot device and is used as a timid damsel in distress.

If they choose to use, either Gwen or Mary Jane again it does a huge disservice in my mind to the women who have played a significant role within Peter's life and development.

Mary Jane
Should the film makers progress with their idea's of returning Parker to high school, then if there is a love interest, they should make her Liz Allan. After all she was Peter's first crush and as it later transpired she always had a fondness for Peter despite being the girlfriend of Flash Thompson.

Yet there is the part of me that feels, they once again are going to return to Mary Jane Watson. based on latest speculation that Shailene Woodley when recently asked in an interview if she would consider the role of Mary Jane Watson for the relaunch, stated she'd be very much interested.

I do need to re-iterate though, should the studios' go down the path of Mary Jane once again i feel it's a opportunity missed. ok, some may argue that both Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, represent the most important love interests in Peter's life. However isn't that because none of the others have even been given a chance or their relationships with Peter been explored?

So now I'll put it to you fine people out there. Lets get this debate started, If you were the screen writer for the forthcoming Spider-Man movie in 2017, who would you have as the love interest? would you have a love interest? let me know in the comments section below.

Review: Spider-Gwen #2 - Most Wanted Pt 2

Story By: Jason Latour

Artist: Robbi Rodriguez

       Cover Art: Robbi Rodriguez

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cover Price: $3.99

The Second Issue of Spider-Gwen, continues to impress with Latour's creation of the world she inhabits taking centre stage in the follow up issue. the pace of the book keeps it's steady pace as the writer takes us deeper into the background of Earth - 65.

As i said above the book focuses on the supporting cast more than Gwen in this issue as the fallout of last issue's cliffhanger come to a head. More characters and familiar names are introduced in this issue, it was interesting to see a return for a number of people and to be re-introduced to some of the aspects that were touched upon in Edge of Spider-Verse #2

Having not read anything by Jason Latour previously I'm really liking the style of the Southern Bastards writer on this book. and you can tell he is revelling in taking this character and running with it, aided by the visuals and stunning artwork from Rodriguez and Rico Renzi's colouring,

The style is an excellent balance of humour, teenage angst and dark broodiness, provided by the Gwen and her supporting cast. this issue gives us a further insight into the world she inhabits and the struggles she has in trying to find just what role she has to play.

The issue itself, picks up immediately from the cliff hanger ending of Issue 1, Showing just how Gwen managed to survive the fall after The Vulture dropped her from. This reveal had strong elements and references made to Peter Parker's first encounter with the Vulture, reinforcing the reader view that Spider-Gwen is feeling a lot like early Stan Lee issues of Amazing Spider-Man. Though that comparison is a little unfair to what it is the team of Latour and Rodriguez are creating here.

after managing to save herself from the fall, Gwen hasn't quite managed to come out unscathed in fact there is a brilliant cameo of a former Spider-Verse ally in this issue that serves as a manifestation of Gwen's conciousness, providing some humerous moments. culminating in an argument of a lost phone.

The phone in question has in fact been located along with the rest of Spider-Gwen's belongings in the alley where she left them to pursue the Vulture in the last issue, by a police officer investigating the crime scene. Also in attendance is Captain Stacy who relieves his daughters possessions  from the officer just as Detective Jean DeWolff arrives with Frank Castle who is the lead investigator on the Spider-Woman case.

The story shifts to an apartment where Gwen is found by two of her friends and former band members Glory Grant and Em Jay.

This exchange serves to inform us just what happened to Gwen in the intervening period from surviving the skydive and arriving back at the apartment, again the Spider-Ham manifestation is present offering the humour and light-heartedness, given the predicament that She's now in. As this is the first time since returning from the alternate dimension that anyone has seen her.

The interaction between, Glory, Gwen and Em Jay, is a bubbling tinder pot and although i'm still not too sure where Latour is taking us with a sniping Em Jay who right now appears to be resentful and jealous of Gwen. basically not displaying any character traits of MJ Watson. but i guess differing aspects of a charcters nature can be addressed as being an alternate version, and I suppose that's what the team are going for by referring to her as "Em Jay" rather than the more familiar MJ.

The girls conversation quickly becomes a heated exchange between Glory and Em Jay, and Gwen uses the opportunity to announce that she has to leave, using available exit to go and hunt for the Vulture and her missing phone.

The story then moves to The two dectectives and Captain Stacy conducting an interview with this worlds Kingpin, as Castle believes there to be a connection between Fisk and The Spider-Woman. as in the last issue we again introduced to Detective Castle's quick temper and intoleristic nature which is quickly brought into check by a phone meeting with Fisk's lawyer Matt Murdoch.

The usage, of Murdoch as a villain in the series so far is very well done and works to the extent that just because the man without fear is a hero in most realities, there are some in which he is not. As we later discover it would appear that Murdoch is not just the Kingpin's lawyer in this world, but is in fact a chief enforcer as well. Given that later the phone call Murdoch is seen torturing the Vulture for apparently killing Spider-Gwen.

The closing of the issue shows the mixture of tone, with Castle and Stacy at a bar brooding over the lack of progression from interviewing the Kingpin in prison. this results in an exchange of words between the two officers of the law before George leaves wondering where Gwen could be.

Spider-Gwen, appears on the wall Captain Stacy states that he assumes that she is looking for her phone, Gwen replies No I'm looking for you.

I don't know about you others out there but I'm still hooked on this book. it has that freshness and is connected to the world of Spider-Man and yet departed enough that it is growing it's own identity. there's a lot of interesting material here that Jason Latour can enthral us with for years.

My score for Spider-Gwen #2 is 8.5 I thought this moved the story forward really well, and managed to introduce a new character seamlessly, whilst giving us still the sense of innocence that we love from Gwen's character mixed with some darker undertones.

Review: Amazing Spider-Man #16 - The Graveyard Shift Pt 1

Story By: Dan Slott

Artist: Humberto Ramos

       Cover Art: Humberto Ramos

Edgar Delgado

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cover Price: $3.99

Well, here we all are. The first issue depicting the post Spider-Verse life of Peter Benjamin Parker has landed. Did you really think that the happy chaps at Marvel were about to give him a sedate time after the excursions and dimension hopping........Nope me niether.

However what we see here is a return of the old Parker luck playing a part in the latest turn of fortune in the life of Peter Parker.

It seems, that for Peter that it never rains but it pours as is often the case. This issue shows us that Spider-Man, hasn't really wasted any time getting back into the throes, of dealing with situations as and when they arise, to the detriment of Parker's everyday life. No change there then. In fact no real surprises all round in this first part of a three part story arc, which also sees the title revert to once a month shipping   to accommodate the Gerry Conway five part mini that starts next week in Amazing Spider-Man #16.1

Well, i say no real surprises, but as it transpires the Issue opens with this being the day that Peter and his team are due to give a presentation to the department of correctional facilities regarding Parker industries plans to  contain super-villains and help them by removing their powers. However in true Spider-Man fashion instead of preparing his team and himself, Peter is embroiled in a battle against "The Iguana"

Who it seems has resurfaced in the intervening period of Spider-Verse to eliminate humanity. one of the great things about Dan Slott's run on Amazing, is he's not afraid to bring back even the most obscure villains for cameo pieces within stories and the situation in this battle with Iguana is filled with great snippets of humour once the villain has discovered that Spider-Man is in fact conversing on the phone first with Aunt May, then with Anna Marconi and Sajani Jefferies at Parker Industries. the reaction of Iguana when he discovers that Spidey isn't as focused as he feels he should be shows incredulity to the situation demanding to be respected.

It's during this battle that we learn the other players in the corporate battle to win the contract at the DOC are Alchemax and Roxxon. On hearing from Sajani that Alchemax are also presenting a bid for the contract, Spider-Man, manages to find a little extra energy to finally take down the Iguana.

whilst this is happening the meeting taken place between Liz Allen and Tiberius Stone of  Alchemax at the Department of corrections where they are giving the presentation to the board regarding their plans for a new secured facility to contain super-villans. Which appears to be placing Alchemax as the forerunner in the eyes of the DOC board members eyes.

Peter arrives, for the Parker industries presentation with just moments to spare, in a dishevelled state following the battle against Iguana, and manages to have a moments to catch up with Liz, before heading into the board room to present the Parker industries bid for the contract.

It's here we see just how Liz Allen has become adept in business with underhand treachery as she mentions to Stone and her step Brother Mark Raxton, if only there was some way they could ruin the bid from Peter's company to ensure that Alchemax wins the contract.

This leads to Stone and Raxton, both heading to the Slide-Away Casino, which is run by Black Cat. to recruit someone to throw a spanner in the works at Parker industries. and the person they find there is a return for a villain not seen in Spider-Man titles for over ten years.

I enjoyed the start of this arc, the first part flowed really well for my tastes and after the heavy feel and intense nature of Spider-Verse for the last three months, this issue added a little levity to the book again.

It's whetted the appetite to see how Slott moves the book forward and just how this will all eventually play into Secret Wars in a couple of months. especially seeing as the book has switched to once a month shipping again for this title. I'm wondering if this will lead directly into "Renew Your vows"

Overall though this was a good issue and even Humberto's art couldn't hinder my enjoyment of the book. Yep that's right I'm actually praising Humberto for a change. after all giving for the last few months we've been spoiled by Coipel and Camuncoli doing stunning visuals anyone was going to struggle with that comparison.

However it does seem to me that Ramos has stepped up his game a little.

My overall score for this issue is going to be 8.0 There was a lot that i liked about it, the humour that snipping about Peter from Stone it all flowed well.

Look Back Series Ep 5, Amazing Spider-Man #111 - To Stalk a Spider

Hey, and welcome to another episode of the Look back series that I'm currently running. If you're new to this series, then let me inform you the purpose of this is to have a look back at all the Amazing Spider-Man Issue's in my collection.

The aim is to give you a brief insight into what the issue entailed, my thoughts on the book, how it came into my belonging. If you want to check out some of the earlier episodes of this series then you can check out the links down the side of this page.

As for this book, well this was a recent aqcuisition actually. I've had this issue only for around four months after winning it in an e-bay auction. I say winning when basically it was a steal, for the price i got it for and the condition of the book itself. given it's age.

Still enough about that, lets get into the book shall we?

the issue itself was written by the legendary Gerry Conway, and pencilled by John Romita Snr. In fact this issue was the first to be written in by Conway on the title and it was as a continuation of a story started by Stan Lee. another notable about this issue is the fact that, it contains the second appearence of the Gibbon, essentially the last Supervillain created by Stan.

The issue continues from the last issue, and begins with Kraven the Hunter in the process of convincing Martin Blank (The Gibbon) to join forces with him to hunt down and destroy Spider-Man.

It transpires that, until this point the world was under the impression that Kraven was dead, following the events of ASM #104. The Gibbon isn't entirely convinced, until Kraven explains how he escaped death in the savage lands.

Fuelled by thoughts of revenge, which is the theme of this story the Gibbon, agrees to join forces with Kraven, as he still feels humilated by his previous encounter with Spider-Man, in which Spidey laughed at Martin's plans to become the newest Superhero to help New York.

in the meantime, we join Spider-Man, on his way to aunt may's apartment whilst lamenting, the lack of time that he's been able to spend with her recently. and also wondering how she's keeping after a fractious discussion between May and Gwen, the latter of which informing the elderly lady that, she's constant over-protection of her nephew was contributing to Peter's latest malaise.

Upon arriving at the apartment, Peter discovers via a friendly window. that May isn't at home, but spies a note addressed to him. As he breaks in, he is unaware that a helpful neighbour has spied Spider-Man breaking and entering.

Peter reads the note from May, which informs him, that she's gone away for awhile. when the Police arrive tipped of by the neighbour. fleeing the scene the police jump to the conclusion that Spider-Man has in fact kidnapped May Parker, continuing the distrust between the hero and the New York public.

Back in the secret lair of Kraven. The hunter has plied The Gibbon with ritualistic herbs designed to release the animal within. It's a ploy that doesn't bode to well for Kraven in the beginning as Kraven has to fend of a series of attacks from the Gibbon, whom believes that Kraven is just attempting destroy him. Eventually the initial effects of the herbs stabilise. Then Kraven is able to explain that the two now have a form of telepathic connection allowing Kraven to see and here whatever The Gibbon does.

Spider-Man however has decided to hunt New York in an attempt to find where Aunt May, has gone, though soon starts to lament the fact that due to reports of kidnapping the citizens of the city are reluctant to help. It's at this point that The Gibbon attacks Spidey, under his mind controlled state and quickly gets the upper hand over the wall crawler, who's slightly distracted by the missing Aunt May.

Sensing, the course of the battle from his lair. Kraven instructs The Gibbon to kill Spider-Man.
However given that the potion and mind control is a form of hypnosis, Gibbon hesitates, rather than deliver the killing blow.

Its during this, hesitation that, Spider-Man how is able to land a blow on the Gibbon sending him hurtling off the rooftop, unconcious. Alarmed with how hard he hit the Gibbon Spidey dives off the rooftop to catch the prone would be villain in mid-air.

The issue closes with Spider-Man atop a building, wondering what was the cause of the sudden attack from Gibbon. and also unable to shake the feeling that the he was being controlled like a puppet by someone behind the scene's.

This is pretty much a transitional issue, seems odd, that the Powers that be at Marvel sanctioned a change of writer in the middle of a story arc, but still it's still an issue that has importance within the history of Spider-Man books. given that Gerry Conway was entrusted at the tender age of 19 years old to take over the reins from Stan Lee, with this story being published just shy of Gerry's 20th Birthday. says a lot for the talent he is, and shows the beginning of how great he was to become. Ably assisted in this issue by the excellent visuals and artwork by John Romita Snr.

Review: New look New Life it's Spider-Woman #5

Story: Dennis Hopeless

  Artist: Javier Rodriguez

       Cover Art: Javier Rodriguez

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cover Price: $3.99

Well, it was teased, we all saw the fallout out of Spider-Verse in the last issue of Spider-Woman. Now it's finally here. This is the start of a new direction for Jessica Drew.

As stated she resigned from The Avengers, cut ties with S.H.I.E.L.D and is now intent of having a more sedate existence (Well more sedate for her) in being a street level superhero.

Given the horror's and death she witnessed during Spider-Verse, Jessica, has decided to take a step out of the big leagues and in an attempt to rediscover herself is intent on going back to basics as it were.

I think this is a bold move by Marvel, after all. Jessica Drew is a mainstay in The Avengers and has been for a very long time. So to completely change the direction of a character just five issues into a relaunched book can be seen as a bit of a gamble. Whether it affects, sales or enhances them is something we will have to wait and see. but in a time where, Marvel have recentlly launched two other "Spider-Women" books in Spider-Gwen and Silk, both as street level heroes, Spider-Woman may struggle to find an audience. I really hope it doesn't as This book deserves to find an audience, there is a lot that differentiates Jessica Drew from both Cindy Moon and Gwen Stacy. That was illustrated by their interactions within Spider-Verse.

She may well have decided in a change in her career but it's not changed her personality, or her drive and that is down to the writing of Denis Hopeless. Who now has an opportunity to take Jessica into area's and situation's I've not really seen her in before. Which to me is the compelling aspect of this book going forward. Free from the contraints of writing someone else's narrative as he was under during the first four issues, we'll now get to see the idea's and journey that Denis wants to take Jessica on. and from this issue to me at least the signs are very good.

I really enjoyed the elements of humour in this book, and here it was illustrated the problems that Jess will face readjusting to street level crime as opposed to the usual fare that she's more accostomed to dealing with. some of these issues were excellently highllighted in a converstaion between Jessica and Ben Urich as, Ben was attempting to coherse Spider-Woman into helping him with a story that he was working on, regarding the disapperance of women associated with low-level super-villains.

which later leads to a fun encounter between Spider-Woman and The Porcupine, where upon encountering a bank robbery in progress Spider-Woman ask's the Porcupine to clarify that he is indeed commiting a number of crimes. Before taking him on.

It's during the fight, that Porcupine informs Spider-Woman that his daughter's life is now threatened due to his capture. Jessica realises that this has similarities to the situation she discussed with Ben Urich. and sneaks back to the bugle to recheck the files making the decision that perhaps this does need further looking into.

So begining the new direction in earnest. after all, this is primarialy a set up issue but it's one that engages the reathe Spider-Verse tieders well and invites us back for a further look, it's a well fleshed out book which is brighter and more vibrant due mainly to the change of artist on the book. As Javier Rodriguez takes over from Greg Land. To me the change enhances the direction change, the use of angles and colours give the panels a distinctly carttony feel, and yet do not detract from the narrative, in fact I prefer the art style of the book so much more to the art of Greg Land. though I concede that the new look won't be for everyone. but as far as I'm concerned this is a solid and bold issue.

Considering i was in two minds to continue with Spider-Woman after the Spider-Verse tie-in's the vibrancy of the art and the interesting new look and direction of the characters has convinced me that i should continue with this book for a while longer.

My score for this issue is a solid 7.5 and fresh direction for Jess that keeps things interesting.

Drew Goddard to Write and Direct Spider-Man. has Dylan O'Brien Been Cast?

Major news and one or two, rumours have emerged in the last few days regarding the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man movie, due in 2017.

The first one being that  Cabin in the woods helmer Drew Goddard, has emerged as the man who will be the writer/director fronting the new standalone Spider-Man movie, slated for 28/7/2017.

As previously mentioned, Goddard is best known for his directorial debut "The Cabin in the Woods" however he has been affliated with the Joss Whedon camp for many years, and has been a highly regarded writer for series's such as Buffy, Angel, Alias and Lost. Not too mention he not only directed Cabin, he also wrote the story, and also penned the screenplay for World War Z. showing that he has serious credentials in adapting bodies of work for the screen.

If you still need convincing Drew has an impressive list of producer credits under his belt and was one the man that Marvel turned to, in order to bring Daredevil to the television screens.

It would therefore show that, Marvel and Sony are indeed working together to pick the best possible people to hopefully drive the re-launch in 2017 to a success. As a fan I'm very impressed and happy with this selection, not only due to the connections Goddard has or his list of credits, but alos because as you can see the start of an epic beard and the fact we share a birthday means that he's earned my trust and I'll be eager to see what he has in store to take the Spider-Man franchise forward.

What this now means for the Sinister Six movie however, is anyone's guess. as it would appear that it, at the moment is seemingly still going ahead, which would mean Drew Goddard is set for probably the most time consuming part of his career. with S6 due November 2016 and Spider-Man in 2017. He is also penning the screenplay for The Martian, which is due for release later this year, and working on the screenplay for the Cloverfield sequel.

The thing that excites me most about this news isn't just the impressive writing credits, it's also the directorial style we may see. Following Cabin in the Woods which was atmospheric as it was grounded and scary. Now many people didn't like Cabin but I'm not one of those, I actually enjoyed it after hearing good feedback, considering I am not a fan of the genre, the film really hit a chord with me. it was the mix of humour with the "Horror" that appealed and if he can find the blend of humour and tension for Spider-Man, then it might not suffer the fate the Webb films did,

However before that story broke there was an interesting snippet of news that appeared on Reddit recently. Now I'm aware that Reddit isn't the best or most likiest places for reliable sources but, The same guy whom reported and released information regarding the Sony/Marvel colaboration deal is the source for the rumour currently doing the rounds regarding whom will be the new actor who will be wearing the webs,

It's rumoured that the choice for the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man has been made and that will be announced in the next couple of weeks.

Following further rumours that, Sony and Marvel were intent of a person of colour to portray the wall-crawler this time round, the apparent choice would show that, the "Non-white" spider-MAn rumours were in part unfounded.

According to the source at Reddit, the actor chosen is Dylan O'Brien. Now I'll be honest. I've not seen a lot of this kid. and so I can't really judge his credentials or highlight anything that he might bring to the role of Peter Parker. However when my wife saw the picture above, she did say he looks like Andrew Garfield. albeit a younger version. and a smidge of Kevin Bacon.

To those unlike me who are completely unfamiliar to him, you may have seen him in last years Maze Runner, or the Tv series Teen Wolf. if you have seen any of his body of work, let me know why he's a good choice.

Though to be honest this right now is just a rumour, but with Captain America: Civil War set to start shooting next month, any announcement you would think have to be made fairly soon.

What are your thought's? Are you impressed with the choice of Drew Goddard to write and direct the re-launched Spider-Man movie? What do you make of the Dylan O'Brien rumour? let me know why you think he is the perfact choice. why not comment below. if you have enjoyed this article then web the +1 button in the face! and want to read more? then please subscribe via google+ or follow on twitter @TelFirth for blog updates or additionally like our Facebook Page The Man who Collects Spider-Man

Look back Series: Ep 4, ASM #94 - On Wings of Death

Hello, welcome to episode 4 in the look back series of Spidey issues from yesteryear as I go through and take a look at all the issues of Amazing Spider-Man, that I have in my ever increasing collection.

The issue, I'm highlighting today is, Amazing Spider-Man #94 from March 1971.I love this issue as it illustrates every possible thing about Peter Parker, at that time in his life. Stan Lee's excellent depiction of teenage angst, puts Parker through emotional and mental turmoil in such a way that isn't explored much in the modern era of Spider-Man comics. and this illustrates what made Peter so easily relate able to the kids growing up and reading about his adventures, and the delicate juggling act of trying to live an ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances.

This is a classic in every sense of the word and should you get the opportunity, to pick it up at a local store in the back issue bins if you can. or at least read it in some form.

it's not packed with wall to wall action, but is more a retrospective issue, it gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of Peter Parker,

On the face of it, to us the reader Peter Parker should really have no reason to be as angst ridden as he is here. He has these amazing abilities, grand adventures, attends a a decent college in the heart of Manhattan. a life of envy of his peers. after all he is idolised as Spider-Man, yes he's also reviled  and feared too. but in most cases for those looking in at Peter's life from the outside, he has a life that many of us would love to have.

This particular issue, also gives the reader and Peter Parker a reminder of just why he is Spider-Man, not just the Spider-bite, but also the reasons too in a unique for the time re-telling of the origins story first seen in Amazing Fantasy #15.

The issue show's Peter in reflective mood as he laments the spectre of Spider-Man, being intrusive into his life, and we are shown the origin from Peter's perspective.and how the impact of being Spider-Man has affected relationships his relationships, The latest being affected being is Gwen Stacy as in this issue the cause of Peter's retrospective malise is a break up with Gwen.

In the meantime, The beetle is back and for some reason is breaking into small businesses in and around Queens, but mysteriously is not taking anything from the stores.

Peter, at this point has made his way to Queens. Having decided to pay a visit, to Aunt May. who tells Peter about the break-ins on the news.

Peter, still in a funk over Gwen goes, for a lie down. Aunt May heads out to get milk from the local store and whilst there is taken hostage by The Beetle who has been cornered by the police, after finding what he had been after, which was a connecting wall to break through into the neighbourhood bank.

Upon waking from his nap, Peter is feeling a bit more relaxed until, he gets told the news regarding May's plight and rushes off tho meet the Beetle. Spidey manages to trick the beetle into releasing May whom he ensures is safe by catching her in a web net that he's previously set up beforehand.

It's moments like this in the early books that really put paid to the myth that Peter is headstrong in certain situations and will blindly rush in without thinking things through.

Once satisfied that May is now safe from harm. Spidey takes his frustrations out on the Beetle, culminating in the villain being thrown into the swimming pool and being weighted down by his costume's steel wings.

The issue closes with the Beetle wondering just why Spider-Man had seemed so angry and determined during this encounter.

Reflections: Amazing Spider-Man #15 - Spider-Verse Epilogue

Story By: Dan Slott

Artist: Guiseppe Camuncoli

       Cover Art: Guiseppe Camuncoli

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cover Price: $3.99

Spider-Verse is over! and I for one am very happy and satisfied at the ending. Ok maybe not the whole ending, but, this Epilogue issue was brilliantly put together and tied up all the loose ends to the entire arc.

it even gave us a few surprises along the way. I'll bet there's a few people after reading this today that might think to themselves, perhaps they'd been too hasty with certain aspects of the story before the whole picture had been revealed. I know I'm one of them guilty as charged.

After all over the course of this whole storyline I've slated Dan Slott, questoned roles of Peter Parker, wondered where the whole journey was taking us and even felt it was just a slaughterfest for the sake of being a slaughterfest.

were'nt Credit where credit is very much due. I was wrong. for years Dan Slott has been telling readers wait till you have the full picture, before jumping to assumptions, and once again he has been proven right, with the closing of this storyline. I might also add that I would have in no way enjoyed this arc and story half as much as i did if the artists weren't Olivier Coipel and Guiseppe Camuncoli. The pair of them have provided some fantastic visuals to the illustrate the story Dan was telling, and once again the artwork in this issue was absolutely first rate.

Given the nature of the issue and the amount of surprises contained within. It would be wrong of me to reveal them in a review, as you should enjoy them first hand, however there are a few things I can mention. We finally get the showdown that was teased in Amazing Spider-Man #11, and this is a showdown you don't want to miss. As we finally get told and shown just who has always been the Superior Spider-Man.

There are set up's for some of the Spider's that survived this story, teasing that we will see them again, and that they have a role to play in the upcoming Secret Wars.

There is a reveal that happens so quick in a blink and you'll miss it type moment that will, have some of you shaking your heads, whilst others will be whooping with joy.

As for the identity's of the Great Weaver and just who Karn is? that also gets solved in a clever twist. as is the set up for Peter Parker himself, as after coming through, this adventure realizes that he is capable of many things, and the final page is such a treat.

This Epilogue, has made the arc. in fact I'm giving this a score of 9.5. it was really enjoyable fun and filled with a lot, of dialogue and action but at no point does it feel rushed.

So as Spider-Verse closes a new era, a new attitude has emerged for Peter Parker I hope it's one that continues,

Review: Spider-Gwen #1 - Most Wanted pt1

 Story By: Jason Latour

Out Now

Artist: Robbi Rodriguez

       Cover Art: Rico Renzi

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Cover Price: $3.99

The most anticipated and hyped comic book release of the year is here! and was it worth the wait? in a word. yes..

It's very difficult to know where to start with this book, given the expectation's caused by the rip roaring success of Spider-Gwen's first appearance in Edge of Spider-Verse #2.

But all the elements of the character and the world she inhabits are back, and it's good to see. After always being on the periphery of the arc during Spider-Verse, I was eager for this series to begin, following what was delivered by the creative writing team in EOSV #2 it was always going to be a difficult task to flesh out her character during an arc filled with every other Spider-Man/Woman/Pig involved.

What this first issue does is give us a brief look back at the events within EOSV #2 and picks up Gwen's story three days after her return from battling alongside other dimensional Spider's against the inheritors.

This is now her story, it's her journey and we're coming along for the ride. However there is an fair bit of world building in this first issue, The Mary Jane's are searching for a new drummer, Captain Stacy has been replaced of the task force by Captain Frank Castle. and then there's an appearance by The Vulture.

I found the pace to this issue a bit slow, but then there's no point in rushing when building a new world. However the action moments are good fun, I really enjoyed how Gwen called out the Vulture for there encounter, preying on his ego to lure him into the open, after The vulture had attacked an injured a cop putting him in hospital.

other things I thought were well done were, the references to the "youtube" video of the Mary Jane's song from EOSV #2 which i'm sure played a huge role in getting a eider audience for that book which then increased the popularity.

All in all, i found this, to be fun as we;re shown a deeper look into the supporting characters and there personalities, and maybe how that will play into the developing story as time goes on.I was glad to see that the personality that I enjoyed with her first appearance are still evident now she has her own series. and I hope that long continues.

I'm goung to say that this is a solid start for the series, it kept me interested and i'm looking forward to seeing where Latour and Rodriguez take the character as she attempts to find he place in the world,

I'd give this issue a solid 7.5. it fell just short of an 8 for me but i do still think it's a good book.

A Black Peter Parker? Why not.

Over the course of the last week, there have been numerous reports and rumours coming out, regarding the future developments of Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward.

over the last few day fans have been taking to social media whether that be Twitter Facebook, or comicbook website fan forums. To discuss comments made by current Spider-Man writer Dan Slott.

Those comments by Slott were, that should, the future depiction of Spider-Man on the cinematic screen have a non-white Peter Parker. Then he would have no problem with that at all.

Many people have since had online discussions with Dan, over the topic. Some agreeing, some being less inclined to do so,

I myself, have had such a discussion with a couple of people on social media just this morning. For the record. I agree with Dan Slott. There is absolutely nothing about the character of Peter Parker, that prevents an actor of any ethnicity from portraying him on the cinema screen. There is also in my mind, no coherent argument or case to be made that would suggest that Peter Parker should be white.

Looking back, the absolute beauty of the character Spider-Man, is the "Everyman" element. Stan Lee created the character to be accessible to "Everybody" It's one of the major reasons for the popularity of the character. Just who is he under the mask? who is in the skin tight costume? it could be you, me, Mahatma Ghandi. Well maybe not Mahatma as he was one for turning the other cheek, The point being you can't state that Spider-Man as a character is accessible to a world wide audience and could be anyone....but only if he's white. Sorry that just doesn't work.

There are also some stating that, race changing and diversity is fine in movies, Just as long as it doesn't touch "Iconic" characters. Just today someone said to me, by all means race change the supporting cast as much as you like, race change the villains too, but race changing "Iconic" characters is a trait that is just unacceptable.

Now it probably won't surprise you to learn, that person had no answer to my question of why? after all, Are the Fantastic Four not Iconic? they are seen as Marvel's first family and yet what's that Jonny Storm is going to be black?

Other arguments against a non-white Peter Parker, usually throw examples of well, why haven't they done it for Superman? why haven't we had a black Batman? well first of we have had a racially diverse Superman. not the character admittedly, but in terms of actor's portraying an "Iconic" character, We have in Dean Cain. who is in fact half Japanese.  As for why not a black Batman, I agree a black Batman is long overdue.

These are not adequate arguments against having a non-white Peter Parker though are they. It's petty whinging if we're being honest. In fact what it really is, is a fear of change. When why be fearful? if there was a black Peter Parker for example, then what a statement it would make. It would state here is one of the worlds most "Iconic" and recognizable hero's embracing diversity and equality.

That is something that as a long standing Spider-Man fan, would make me immensely proud, a race changed Peter Parker leading the way, showing that race and skin colour makes no difference to the basic elements of his character. being the first and leading the way is something that Spider-Man is no stranger to. back in 1962, when Stan Lee pitched the idea of a teenage super-hero to his boss at Marvel. He was told, it won't work. No-one wants to read about a teenage superhero. Well here we are 52 years later still reading the exploits of Peter Parker.

What are your thought's? why exactly are you for or against race changing Peter Parker? why not comment below. if you have enjoyed this article then web the +1 button in the face! and want to read more? then please subscribe via google+ or follow on twitter @TelFirth for blog updates or additionally like our Facebook Page The Man who Collects Spider-Man
